No lighting

Reported via mobile in the Not working (NH) category anonymously at 19:34, Friday 3 January 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6928346.

I regularly travel along the M53 occasionally doing the whole stretch of it. I can not believe the lack of lighting on the motorway it is extremely dangerous and it’s a disaster waiting to happen! There is no streetlights on and none of the cat eyes work, I have witnessed so many people driving across two lanes in the hours of darkness and even myself find it hard to keep the correct lane positioning especially when on a bend due to the lack of lighting. I work shifts so travel at all hours along the M53 and I only feel safe late at night when I can use my full beams if no other cars are present otherwise it is dangerous and at minimum cat eyes should be working to atleast help with lane discipline etc.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about the streetlights and cat's eyes on the M53.

We have switched lighting off on this stretch of road to support the Department of Transport’s aim to reduce carbon emissions. These roads have been carefully chosen with all road users safety considered.

We are still using road lighting where it is needed, however, we are confident that we can use less of it without a significant impact on safety.

We will continue to monitor this and may restore the lighting if the situation changes.

The condition of cat's eyes are currently not safety critical. We'll also continue to monitor this as part of our regular route inspections and action as necessary.

    Kind regards

    National Highways

State changed to: No further action
