Footpaths completely unmaintained on A628
Reported via desktop in the Pavement/footpath/cycleway/bridleway issue (NH) category anonymously at 12:29, Tue 10 December 2024
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6844127.
The footpaths along the A628 have fallen into a state of total decay, with zero maintenance in the last 15 years performed. All the sections have collapsed wall debris blocking them periodically that needs to be cleared, as well as debris, detritus and overgrown vegetation. The sharp bends on which the footpaths go behind armcor barriers are extremely bad and not passable. Please do some basic safety improvements so they can be used with the minimum of expected safety...

Thank you for your email of 10 December about the condition of the A628. We understand your concerns and appreciate you taking the time to contact us about the issue.
The general maintenance of the carriageway and footpaths is Local Authority responsibility, this includes detritus. In this case it would be Derbyshire County Council who can be contacted via https://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/ home.aspx.
We do undertake sign and visibility clearance but this is predominantly on the east bound side of the road, as the west bound is predominantly water and the responsibility of United Utilities.
Our Route Managers work as closely as possible with external stakeholders, United Utilities being one of them. We have raised the issue on numerous occasions and will continue to do so.
We do undertake work outside of our remit to ensure the footpaths and carriageways are passable when issues like this occur, but the responsibility for repair lays solely with United Utilities who can be contacted via https://www.unitedutilities.com/ .
Thank you again for contacting us. If there is anything we can help you with, please email or telephone our Contact Centre. They’re available 24 hours a day by phone: 0300 123 5000 or by email info@nationalhighways.co.uk. Alternatively, please visit the National Highways website at nationalhighways.co.uk.
Kind Regards
National Highways
