Collapsed service pit cover

Reported via desktop in the Pavement/footpath/cycleway/bridleway issue (NH) category by Dennis Regan at 19:13, Tue 3 December 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6815853.

A service pit cover has collapsed in the combined footpath/National Cyle Network Route 20. This has been in this condition for over 6 months and has been temporarily covered by a lightweight pedestrian duty yellow cover. The temporary cover has been dislodged a number of times, possibly by vehicles pulling off the A23 and is not suitable for cycles to pass over. I have put this back myself a number of times as if left dislodged it is a serious hazard that could cause a very severe or fatal injury, being immediately adjacent to the A23 with a national Speed Limit

  • Thank you for making your report.

We're aware of the condition of the cover which belongs to Virgin Media. A report was made to them earlier this year under Section 81 of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, reference FNS8192398459-S81-UW which sets out the duty of a utility company to maintain their assets.

They've accepted responsibility and made temporarily safe with the yellow cover.

We're sorry that this matter remains outstanding and you can contact Virgin Media directly on 0800 694 1122 (option 7) to raise your concerns and seek an update on when permanent repairs are planned.

    Kind regards
