Slow slow slow at hindhead

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6773445.
Why oh why can't you sort the 40mph speed limit out on northbound carriageway. You could build a new tunnel in the time it takes to sort whatever issue it is. And it might be a little less frustrating for the travelling public if you could explain (a) what the problem is and (b) when it will be fixed.

Thank you contacting National Highways.
I appreciate the impact this may have on your journey, and I apologise for any disturbance caused, it is never our intention to inconvenience road users on our network unnecessarily. Unfortunately, we were unable to lift the speed restriction by mid-August 2024 as we had originally planned, due to an ongoing intermittent fault with the traffic lights at the tunnel. To ensure everyone’s safety we have had to keep the speed restriction in place, please be assured we are working hard to find a resolution to the issue. The fault only relates to the traffic lights on the northbound carriageway, and with the southbound carriageway being unaffected, we did not need to reduce the speed limit in that direction. The speed limit restriction should add less than a minute of delay to journeys through the tunnel. However, I acknowledge that this is undesirable and comes with the potential for additional congestion delays, as soon as we can safely return to the national speed limit we will do so.
The speed limit through the northbound side of the tunnel will remain in place now until mid-December. We’ll be doing the necessary repairs to resolve the fault and lift the temporary speed limit during nighttime closures (9pm-5am) of the tunnel on 16, 17, 18 and 19 December. The normal diversion route will be in place via A325 and A31 as usual.
You can also see this information online. I thank you once again for your patience and understanding while this speed limit reduction has been in place.
Kind regards National Highways
