Litter along entire stretch of A2 (both directions)

Reported via mobile in the Main Carriageway (NH) category anonymously at 17:43, Sun 17 November 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6753736.

A vast amount of litter remains along a considerable stretch of the A2 and all slips roads. This has been reported on numerous occasions with National Highways appearing to do nothing about it. This is an utter embarrassment and needs to be dealt with!!!!

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter.

We regard litter as a significant issue, and we share your concern about the amount of rubbish discarded on our roads, and I’ve raised your concerns with our team. We have a wide road network across the south of England and therefore with a limited budget are required to concentrate our efforts on prioritising areas with the heaviest amount of litter in accordance with the Defra Code of Practice system (Grades A to D).

We carry out regular litter inspections along the A2 and our team will raise jobs to instruct our maintenance partners to litter pick sections of our network that are identified as a priority first.

Although other areas will experience levels of litter that are unsightly, they will be tackled under our normal litter maintenance programme periodically. This may cause litter to be left on the roadside for longer periods than we’d like.

I hope you can understand that clearing rubbish is very costly and is an ongoing challenge across our network. This often requires partial or full road closures planned in advance to carry out any clearance work. This can be disruptive and takes time. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response.

    Kind Regards

    National Highways
