No just vegetation growth but a serious obstruction of view. MIRROR NEEDED at junction to see traffic.

Reported via mobile in the Overgrown or obscuring view (NH) category anonymously at 09:45, Thu 24 October 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6652799.

To avoid serious collisions, a mirror at this location would grand road users the opportunity to view the incoming traffic.

This is a serious issue.

Updates

  • Thank you for reporting difficulties faced when using the junction between the A628 and A6024 at Woodhead.

We're very aware of the need for improvements along the A628 corridor to improve safety, congestion, and reliability, however delivering any meaningful improvements to current road design and safety standards is very challenging due to the topography and its location within the Peak District National Park.

Any improvements to current standards would require significant investment as well as likely a large-scale construction which could be environmentally harmful to the area, as well as extremely disruptive for residents and motorists.

In relation to your request for mirrors, this also presents several use, design, engineering, and maintenance challenges which often make their use inappropriate.

The use of mirrors can result in it being very difficult to judge oncoming drivers speed, distance, or path, particularly at night. Cyclists are very often invisible in convex mirrors being to the edge of the normal path. There's potential for headlamp glare, particularly when intersecting carriageways are at differing levels. They’re ineffective in rain or frost. They could cause distracting glare in low sun at dawn or dusk. And they may not show all approaching hazards.

Mirrors may be used in certain situations, such as at driveways on slower routes, however on a faster and more complex route such as the A628, they may present more danger.

We do however have schemes in our pipeline aiming to improve safety along the route. ‘Village Gateways’ will be hopefully delivered this year and will improve signage and road markings along the length of the route to encourage speed limit compliance. We also have the ‘Trans Pennine Connectivity Safety & Resilience Study (TPCSRS) which was completed in Spring 2024 and will be published in the next few months. The study set out proposals that can be delivered and sequenced in the short, medium and long term, allowing potential investments decisions to be made in the next Road Investment Strategy in the period between 2025 and 2030.

    Kind regards
