Road layout

Reported via desktop in the Traffic lights (NH) category anonymously at 19:23, Thu 17 October 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6629092.

The southbound exit (as reported by others) is shocking. In my opinion it requires another set of lights and box junctions installing to allow egress for traffic leaving the M18 to enter the A6182. Ideally it would have been better to construct a dive under or flyover to egress, but an additional set of traffic lights and box junction would be a cheaper option.

Updates

  • Thank you for taking the time to report this issue.

We're very much aware this junction requires improvement and have been working closely with Doncaster City Council during the current Roads Investment Period (2020-2025) to jointly develop and deliver a scheme to address the concerns you've raised.

Ultimately this type of scheme will require considerable funding due to the complex engineering challenges presented by both the bridge decks and surrounding topography on each motorway slip road and arms on the local road network. There is currently no funding available to National Highways or Doncaster Council that would support such a large investment.

We're also sorry to hear about your frustrations regarding motorists running red lights. This is unfortunately a police issue as National Highways have no power of enforcement. We're hopeful that a scheme in the not too distant future will ease traffic flows and mitigate some of the dangerous driving that is often caused by frustration.

In the meantime, we do have national studies on-going. This work includes looking at junctions two to three of the M18 and what can be done to improve safety and congestion here, however due to it being in its infancy we cannot yet offer any commitment to the scheme until the study is completed and we have a clear picture of funding for future years.

We're hopeful the outputs from ongoing studies as well as the publishing of the governments next Roads Investment Strategy (RIS3 2025-2030) will allow us to fund and deliver a scheme in future years. We continue to work closely with Doncaster Council to ensure any development meets the needs of both the strategic and local road network.

    Kind regards National Highways
