Tunnel structure concerns

Reported via mobile in the Structures (eg bridges, fencing, noise barriers) (NH) category anonymously at 10:07, Sat 12 October 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6606141.

A daily user of the Hindhead Tunnel for 5 years, I have noticed significant water ingress between the joins in the tunnel casing in the northbound bore over the last 6 months.

It’s particularly noticeable on the right hand side as you approach the exit. There are runnels of dirty water staining the walls and puddles are sometimes spilling onto the carriageway, particularly after periods of heavy rainfall.

I am concerned about the structural integrity of the tunnel if this much ground water is finding its way inside.

Updates

  • Thank you for submitting this report.

The tunnel structure is inspected on a 2 yearly basis, with a close examination carried out every six years. A detailed inspection of the water seepage was carried out in 2021 and is closely monitored by our structures inspection teams. Tunnel concrete linings are designed to be exposed to groundwater and will in some cases like Hindhead tunnel seep through construction joints. There is no concern as to the structural integrity of the tunnel at this time.

We will continue to monitor this.

    Kind regards National Highways
