Chamber covers in road surface M56 Weaver Viaduct

Reported via mobile in the Structures (eg bridges, fencing, noise barriers) (NH) category anonymously at 15:44, Fri 11 October 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6601823.

Given that at least one of the 6 chamber covers in the road surface of the M56 Weaver viaduct fails every 2 to 3 months is it not time that either a better job is done with type of frame and cover (locking E-grade?) and reinstatement around them, or else they are removed from the live lanes and only the ones in the hard shoulder are left insitu? Presumably these are there to access the underside of the deck which could be done from the outer edge with a new walkway constructed on the supports, or utilising a mechanical 'Underbridge Inspection' unit for any inspections required. Given the cost in Traffic management and bringing in an emergency crew every time one fails, and the cost to the region, and users of the M56 in delays and disruption - a better solution MUST be found and put in to place as soon as possible to prevent this farce happening again.
