Northbound 40 limit

Reported via mobile in the Electronic Sign (NH) category anonymously at 16:41, Tue 8 October 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6564078.

I've seen other comments regarding this now long term and now beyond the stage being ridiculous issue. I've also seen the less than informative, helpful or comforting answers. Please confirm: 1 - there is an intent to fix this. 2 - there is a plan to fix this. 3 - suppliers are not dragging their feet 4 - suppliers are being held to account 5 - suppliers are not able to do nothing and/or continually fail without any contractual remedy

  • Thank you for submitting this report.

I appreciate the impact this may have on your journey, and I apologise for any disturbance caused, it is never our intention to inconvenience road users on our network unnecessarily. Unfortunately, we were unable to lift the speed restriction by mid-August 2024 as we had originally planned, due to an ongoing intermittent fault with the traffic lights at the tunnel. To ensure everyone’s safety we have had to keep the speed restriction in place, please be assured we are working hard to find a resolution to the issue. The fault only relates to the traffic lights on the northbound carriageway, and with the southbound carriageway being unaffected, we did not need to reduce the speed limit in that direction. The speed limit restriction should add less than a minute of delay to journeys through the tunnel. However, I acknowledge that this is undesirable and comes with the potential for additional congestion delays, as soon as we can safely return to the national speed limit we will do so. We appreciate your patience and understanding whilst we continue to investigate this ongoing issue.

    Kind regards National Highways
