Drainage

Reported via desktop in the Flooding/drainage (NH) category anonymously at 08:45, Thu 3 October 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6545752.

When we have any significant rainfall, the drains in South Newton along the A36 simply can’t cope and the result is a lot of deep standing water on both sides of the carriageway, causing traffic to slow down or stop and results in vehicles having to pass in the middle of the road. This is not acceptable on a busy A road and causes a huge amount of spray from vehicles been thrown against garden walls and fences and even one property. This problem has been ongoing for many years. As the local farmer, I was approached back in November 2003 by the then contractors Atkins Highways and Transportation to agree a new drainage outfall scheme across my field to improve the carriageway drains ability to clear water, but I think lack of funding never allowed this scheme to be agreed or completed. What is the Highways Agency going to do about this ongoing problem which is both dangerous to vehicles and especially to pedestrians trying to walk along the pavements in the village and also the concern of this continuous spray from vehicles when it rains on the integrity of our garden walls and fences. This problem has got worse recently and with the higher frequency of high rainfall events this problem needs to be seriously addressed.

Updates

  • I would like to also ask what will be done with this ongoing, worsening situation. We have lived in South Newton for over 15 years and the standing water is now a major problem for pedestrians and properties. Some properties are hard to access without getting drenched by passing traffic and pedestrians have to bide their time until it’s safe to pass. Unless action is taken an accident is sure to follow

  • Again, we have standing water and flooding along this stretch of road today, when we have heavy rainfall. When are National highways going to address this dangerous issue on this busy road?
