Fence damaged on footpath leading to motorway.

Reported via desktop in the Structures (eg bridges, fencing, noise barriers) (NH) category by Durham County Councillor Christine Fletcher at 09:06, Thu 12 September 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6463791.

The 1 meter high fence marks a footpath running alongside the motorway. The fence is maintained by Highways England so Durham County Council or Belmont Parish Council will not repair it. It needs just a few planks of wood to replace the planks that are missing. The path is in a poor state and the area desperately needs strimming. Again - DCC will not do this as it is Highways England land. This was reported on 13/8/2023 with ref FMS4887498 but no action has been taken. Residents of Carrsway are very frustrated and would appreciate timely action.

Updates

  • Thank you for taking the time to report this issue.

We've had inspectors out on a site visit today to look at the footpath and fence. We can confirm that there are a few timber rails which need reinstating on the highway boundary fence. As such we've instructed our maintenance contractor to carry this out.

However, the footpath along with the offside fence is not the responsibility of National Highways, these sit with yourselves at Durham County Council and as such we're unable to assist with this part of your enquiry.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
