Lots of litter along the verges and central reservation
Reported via desktop in the Layby/ Emergency Area (NH) category anonymously at 15:03, Mon 19 August 2024
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6374535.
There is lots of litter on both sides and in the central reservation of the A404(M) and A404 between the Holyport Interchange and Burchett's Green Roundabout. I understand that the A404 is not within your jurisdiction but National Highways is responsible for the A404(M). Despite previous reports made by others via this website, it appears that the litter has not been collected for a long time. The litter is partially concealed by the overgrown vegetation at the moment but it is clearly evident during the autumn and winter and when strimming has taken place, which incidentally exacerbates the problem by shredding the original litter into many more pieces. Please arrange for the litter to be collected more regularly going forwards and for the litter to be collected before mowing. I'd also be grateful if you could provide details of your current litter picking and mowing arrangements for the A404M (contractor name, timetable, etc).

Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter.
We have passed your report to our local inspector who will review the issue as part of their next safety inspection and arrange any remedial action.
Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is carefully planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people.
Litter picks often require lane closures, which are disruptive to traffic flow. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response.
Kind regards
National Highways
