Deceased PET Cat - Central Reservation

Reported via mobile in the Off the carriageway (NH) category anonymously at 12:47, Tue 30 July 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6293626.

There’s a deceased cat (that matches the description of a few missing cats in the area) on the central reservation of the A14 (opposite the slip road coming from St Saviours Interchange and heading in the direction of Newmarket. (Since early this morning 30/07/2024).

Due to the heat and general weather conditions at present, this cat would ideally benefit from being retrieved ASAP (especially as there’s a high chance it is somebody’s missing PET). I’m aware the cat is already deceased, but it shouldn’t be left to decompose before being reunited back with its owners. (I know you do anyway, but please do be sure to scan for a microchip)

If it’s not collected, there’s an extremely high chance people will enter the carriageway to retrieve it themselves - even if it poses a great danger to themselves and road users. It’s already posted on social media, so people are aware.

Apologies if this sounds abrupt, I’m just very concerned. Please help.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about the animal on our network.

Safety is our highest priority and any animals on the carriage way that pose a risk to vehicles and their occupants will be removed as quickly and safely as possible.

Household pets, such as a dogs and cats, will be retrieved, and we endeavour to reunite pets with their owners if they can be identified through microchips or other identification.

Wild animals, lying off the carriageway, on verges or the central reservation, are normally left to naturally decay. However, they will be removed if they are considered a hazard, a danger to public health or there is a statutory obligation for testing or removal.

Our local inspector team will make these assessments during their regular safety inspections.

    Kind regards National Highways
