Hello I am Simon Crowley from Childsbridge Lane Kemsing in Kent and I recently submitted a complaint/report to Kent County Council who tell me that you are the organisation I need to speak to. Many residents of Childsbridge lane, Castle drive and indeed other locations along the M26 have for many years been putting up with terrible and unremitting traffic noise emanating from the M26. Some years ago a plan to resurface this stretch was shelved due to costs even though it was promised. To add insult to injury a local land owner removed a vast amount of trees from alongside the motorway which acted in some small way to diffuse some of the noise. With the increase in traffic and heavy freight the noise can be heard 24 hours a day and in the summer windows must be shut to block it out which is most unpleasant It is a common cause for conversation and consternation and I have no doubt that it detrimentally affects house prices or even the chance of being able to sell a house once a prospective buyer hears it. I am looking to leave this area as it has become intolerable and I know of other people who feel the same. Could you please advise me of any plans to investigate this terrible racket or indeed to dampen it in any way? Many thanks in anticipation

Best regards

Simon Crowley

  • Dear Simon Crowley

Thank you for your enquiry regarding noise on the M26.

I can confirm that our next resurfacing of the M26 at this location, is due during the 2027/28 financial year. This will use our low noise material at that time.

I would like to confirm that whilst trees are perceived to reduce noise, unfortunately this is only the case when there is a lot of them between yourself and the notice, and they have to be densely packed.

I appreciate this response is not what you were hoping for.

For any other queries, please contact our Customer Contact Centre. They are available 24 hours a day by phone: 0300 123 5000 or by email: info@nationalhighways.co.uk.
