Caxton Gibbet cycle and footway diversion not fit for purpose

Reported via desktop in the Pavement/footpath issue (NH) category anonymously at 16:54, Wednesday 17 July 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6242275.

The new footpath and cycle lane diversion which was put in place on 8th July between the Caxton Gibbet and Brockley Road is completely unsuitable for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users. After just a week, the pathway is flooded and with all the sand and mud has become a quagmire in places. I cycle to work several days a week, and today I was unable to get to work since it was impossible to cycle along this diversion, and my bike tyres were completely clogged up with sand and mud and were unable to turn properly. It would have been dangerous for me to continue my commute to work. It is a legal requirement to provide a suitable alternative footpath during the construction works, and this alternative is far from fit for purpose. It has been open for one week during summer and is already unsuitable. This is not a viable option until the new cycle paths open in 2027. It particularly affects those who are already disadvantaged and don't own or drive a car, or those choosing a more sustainable, less polluting and less congestion causing option. It will mean that myself and others will have to find an alternative more polluting and more expensive option to get to work, which is simply not acceptable.
