The traffic lights allowing pedestrians to cross the north bound slip roads from the A1 to the A68, north and west bound, have been broken for 5 weeks. Worse: whoever is charged with fixing them closed off the route for pedestrians, leaving no way for wheelchair users or people who have trouble with steps to navigate the crossing

Reported via desktop in the Traffic lights (NH) category anonymously at 16:01, Wednesday 17 July 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6242022.

It should never have been closed off, and if people are simply not to be trusted to cross a road (as they demonstrably can be) without a green man, then it should have been closed for the minimum time, and not for the FIVE WEEKS it has been. The obvious thing to do would have been simply to put a sign up saying the lights weren't working. Outrageous to simply physically prevent crossing.

Updates

  • Thank you for your email of 17 July 2024 about the pedestrian crossing being out of use on the north bound slip roads from the A1 to the A68, north and west bound. We understand your concerns and appreciate you taking the time to contact us about the issue.

We understand your frustration regarding the amount of time the crossing has been out of service. This is due to lead times on the parts required for the permanent repairs. We have been informed the repairs are due 15 August 20224. The crossing point will unfortunately remain closed until then as we can not leave a pedestrian crossing point open with no pedestrian demand unit.

Thank you again for contacting us. If there is anything we can help you with, please email or telephone our Contact Centre. They’re available 24 hours a day by phone: 0300 123 5000 or by email info@nationalhighways.co.uk. Alternatively, please visit the National Highways website at nationalhighways.co.uk.

    Kind Regards
