Perpendicular ridges in undulating surface M62 westbound from Jct12

Reported via mobile in the Road surface (NH) category by Dr ER Jago at 21:07, Fri 5 July 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6196542.

M62 between Jct12 &Jct11 had undulations for decades (due to old mine workings). Now this section has developed transverse ridges. Recently, I rode my motorcycle at 60 mph in the dark and these transverse ridges almost threw me off my machine. (Not so bad when in my car, just very noticeable.) Changing lanes whilst riding a motorcycle is a careful manœuvre, having to take a very shallow angle. In even moderate traffic, the impatience of car and HGV drivers means that as a motorcyclist one has to balance the impatience of four+ wheeled users against changing lanes on a ridged section of motorway at motorway speed and being ejected from your machine. Can the ridges that have been built up be 'given a shave' back to gentle undulations, that are easily dealt with?

Updates

  • FMS6197643 I drive this route each week have noticed that the ridges are getting worse. With improved weather I have recently taken the route on motorcycle and agree with the above assessment that this stretch of carriageway on the M62 is particularly hazardous to motorcycles at all times of day but particularly in low light, and especially to riders unaware of the condition of the route.
