Traffic congestion due to poor visibility of traffic lights

Reported via desktop in the Traffic lights (NH) category anonymously at 12:09, Mon 10 June 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6087167.

Thank you for your closing response to my earlier report https://report.nationalhighways.co.uk/ report/ 5905794 I understand and am pleased you find no safety concerns. However, the report was, and remains, that traffic congestion is the issue caused by poor visibility of the ahead traffic signals from the A21 southbound. This congestion often amounts to several miles of tailbacks on the A21S approach to Flimwell and the adjoining roads. A simple change to the installation would improve the efficiency of the whole junction by keeping platoons together and hence reduce congestion and the resulting pollution and wasted time and frustration. Please reconsider the case for adding ahead signals more visible. The pole is there already! If traffic flow not a NH responsibility, can you point this at who is responsible please? Many thanks.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report. The Flimwell crossroads is the only section of the A21 with traffic lights due to it being a single 2 lane carriageway at a busy junction (A268 & B2087), for that reason there will always be a level of congestion in that area, more so during rush hour. It has 4-way traffic lights with a filter lane on the southbound and northbound for turning vehicles in order to ease congestion. There are 2 sets of ‘Queues Ahead’ signs which are clearly visible followed by 2 sets of traffic lights signs, both of which are after Pillory Corner on the southbound side. The congestion like most places with traffic lights is due to heavy traffic during peak periods. Having reviewed the location, our team confirm our signage is in place and is visible. We also believe some unnecessary issues may be caused by driver's not adjusting their speed accordingly. Please contact our Customer Contact Centre moving forward should you have any queries of this nature, as this is a reporting tool only, and is designed for the public to report defects such as a broken sign or barrier, overgrown vegetation, or potholes.
