Manhole Cover, A35, Winterbourne Abbas
Reported via desktop in the Road surface (NH) category by David Bailey at 10:48, Fri 3 May 2024
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5928853.
Hi I wish to report the manhole cover which is the opposite side of the road to the Pottery, Winterbourne Abbas, DT2 9LW. I live in Hare Cottage behind the Pottery and have noticed the manhole cover is now making a very loud clanking noise whenever a vehicle goes over it to the point it is now waking me at night. I have spoken to other neighbours who have also noticed it. Apparently there has been problems with the cover before, therefore can you please inspect and rectify the problem.

Since I reported this manhole cover to Highways who seen out someone to inspect the cover the very next day and issued BT a Section 81 for urgent repairs. With the A35 carrying the amount of traffic it does I would have thought that BT would make repairs a priority. True to form with BT no sign of and work being commenced.

Nothing has happened and the problem has become worse to the point that I am hardly getting any sleep.

BT are responsible for the manhole cover. I spoke with one of their call handllers who informed me he would have an inspector visit the site within 48hrs. Did not see said inspector and no work has been carried out to rectify the problem. It now sounds like someone firing a double barrelled shotgun everytime a vehicle dirves over the manhole. I know for a fact other neigbours have also complained. I am now in the process of going to the press.

You are having a laugh by asking if the problem had been fixed !!!. I would laugh as many of the neighbours would if it had been repaired. I have found out since last month that others have been complaining about this manhole cover since last February. I have asked Highways if they could not enforce BT to repair the problem, I received a reply that they (Highways) had made several phone calls to BT on our behalf and were look at whether legal action could be taken. Myself and neighbours are not holding our breath!

One word reply, Nothing! I have emailed the MP for West Dorset, Edward Morello from whom I have yet to receive a reply. I inspected the manhole cover two weeks ago and found a hole opening up in the road surface to one corner also the whole framework of the cover is moving when a vehicle passes over. It seems that being a small community on a major road with a problem can be over looked and the problem brushed under the carpet.

No progress with this matter. A neighbour is attempting to directly deal with Openreach but as yet nothing positive has come from it. I am in contact with the BBC who is interested in the story and have themselves been in contact with Openreach but once again at this moment in time nothing has materialised.

No sign of Openreach the manhole is emitting an even louder noise, It seems like Openreach has not got to answer to anyone and are full of false promises.

After making yet more complaints to Openreach and being issued with yet more meanless job numbers and verbally given more lies we are just being fobbed off! The annoying bit is that it seems that Openreach have no one they have to answer too.

No movement on this ongoing problem, yet more unfullfilled promises from Openreach to one of my neighbours. I invite any official from Openreach to spend a night here as the noise has become worse. Come the summer there is no way you will get any sleep with the windows open as it keeps waking my partner up when she stays with windows closed.

With more deadlines broken, we have now got the local MP involved. BBC Radio Solent are coming out next week to cover the story. I spoke with Dorset Council this week. They are as frustrated and powerless as us with the lack of repair. They have been in contact with Openreach and stated their opinions. Three weeks ago, Highways informed me that they had taken photos, used a noise meter, sending their findings to Openreach.
