Numerous messaging signs are not illuminated between jct 26 and jct 29 East and West

Reported via mobile in the Electronic Sign (NH) category anonymously at 09:56, Monday 22 April 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5883159.

A number of variable speed signs are not displaying any message or speed, including one the on the 8th April when approaching roadworks one red 'X' was not displaying in lane 3 (of 4) around j28 (East bound). This is despite the previous gantry displaying two red 'X's for lanes 3 and 4. Also a number of gantries have signs out when variable speed restrictions are in force - one gantry close to jcn26 had only one sign showing speed in lane 2. Both sections could do with a check to see what signs are operating as they currently the present a poor interface to drivers.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report of 22 April 2024 about faulty overhead signals ('VMS'). We appreciate the time you've taken to contact us.

Faults of these kind automatically report to our central technological system. This enables us to investigate and fix them as soon as possible. The replacement of these signs requires the use of a crane to fit new VMS boards, and so requires lengthy road closures to implement. Coupled with the distance, this makes it difficult to schedule the works in for one singular closure.

We can advise that we're currently in the process of scheduling these works in and allocating engineer resource to rectify these signals. Replacement remains a priority for us, and we're looking to arrange these works as soon as possible.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you again for reporting this to us. If there is anything we can help you with, please email or telephone our Contact Centre. They’re available 24 hours a day by phone: 0300 123 5000 or by email info@nationalhighways.co.uk. Alternatively, please visit the National Highways website at nationalhighways.co.uk.

    Kind regards, National Highways
