Litter on roundabout and slip roads

Reported via desktop in the Slip Roads (NH) category anonymously at 17:24, Wednesday 3 April 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5802671.

Litter on roundabouts and verges and slip roads both London and coast bound. It’s disgusting and a real grot spot.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter.

Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is carefully planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people. Litter picks often require lane closures, which are disruptive to traffic flow. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response.

At present, we have litter clearance planned between March and April 2024 from the M25 up to Pepperhill as part of our upcoming closures for our A2 resurfacing scheme. I can also confirm additional jobs have been raised to tackle litter along the A2 west and the M2 following our recent inspections.

We also have outstanding jobs to clear the litter and debris at the A228 junction with the M2, however there’re two sections of the Wrotham Road junction we can’t shut currently, as the designated diversion route we require is being closed for 18 months whilst the local authority conduct essential work to this route, unfortunately, this won’t reopen until 2025.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
