Notorious Crossing Junction

Reported via desktop in the Road surface (NH) category anonymously at 15:22, Thu 7 March 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5682222.

As a commuter I cannot count how many times there have been accidents and near missing on this junction. The slight bend in the A38 reduces reaction time for road users heading to Looe cross. A solution would be a bridge with slip roads could be constructed 200 yards south as there is an embankment on both sides of the road. Some of the other junctions that join the A38 at right angles nearby could also link to this bridge reducing hazardous situations.

  • Thank you for taking the time to report this, it’s extremely useful and adds to our own understanding of the junctions/roads performance. We’re currently studying this junction as part of a scheme which covers the Island Shop junction (adjacent to Liskeard) down to Treulefoot roundabout, a stretch of approximately 9km. The scheme covers the Lean Quarry junction which I think is the one you have pointed out in your message. The scheme also covers all other adjoining junctions between these two points. A significant amount of work has been undertaken over the last few years to look at what could be done to improve safety here. Recent study work has included options such as the solution you describe with a bridge and linking roads but also several other options. We’re aiming to undertake physical surveys as part of this study around the summer 2024 to further advance the project which will enable us gain a more accurate idea of costs and constraints. We’ve been in consultation with Cornwall Council during this project so far and we intend to have discussions with the local MP and Parish Council to ensure there is a good understanding of what could be delivered and we can take away comments and advice from those parties to form part of our decision making. We do not have a fixed idea of when a full scheme could be delivered as its in part subject to the above consultation and the completion of a feasibility. Subject to funding a feasible scheme we’ll be able to firm up a delivery date for the work. However, we’re aware of the risks at this location and so whilst we do wish to deliver a permanent solution, we’ll inevitably look at an interim solution to reduce the risk as far as practicable.

    Kind regards
