Traffic light sequence causing massive tailbacks on A588

Reported via mobile in the Traffic lights (NH) category anonymously at 11:26, Thu 22 February 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5614459.

Permanent lights switch on at skippool junction, priority for westbound traffic completely wrong resulting in massive tailbacks all the way back over shard bridge and into Hambleton ONCE AGAIN

Updates

  • Now the new bypass is nearly finished there is still a massive problem. Coming from anywhere over Wyre via Shard Bridge is terrible, the traffic lights at mains lane / shard road, do not let the right amount of traffic through. From 8am until about 11am today terrible queues. SORT OUT THE LIGHTS - 3YEARS OF TERRIBLE ROAD WORKS. River Wyre roundabout should have stayed, looks awful with all lights. Whoever designed this needs to travel through it. Big mistakes, cost too much money

  • Took 1.5 hours to get from St Aidan's school to River Wyre this morning. Light sequence needs changing URGENTLY

  • We own a shop in poulton, what is normally a 15 minute maximum journey took over 1 hour. We had missed appointments all day due to it. It’s criminal that you can steal peoples time by illogical, carefree decisions

  • The traffic lights need sorting as the traffic from over Wyre is taking over an hour to do a 10-20 minute journey to poulton. The lights onto the new by pass are only allowing 5-6 cars through so everything is building up

  • Coming from over wyre towards poulton over wyre bridge the traffic is horrendous it’s queuing all the way back into hambleton village because the light sequences are not right. Also the road is not marked up for 2 lanes allowing traffic to turn left or right until near the top. This needs addressing. An hour to get out of hambleton village to the mains lane lights is ridiculous

  • I recall being told at the Highways agency public relations two day event at the Shovels car park (Hambleton) during the Summer 2023, that the traffic light sequences for traffic from over wyre were monitored daily. I did say to the representatives answering the numerous questions throughout the two days, that whoever was monitoring the lights wasn’t doing their job properly. A more recent reply to an email sent in December 23 assured me that teams were continually monitoring traffic and could make “adjustments to traffic management” This was last year and the same person/people are obviously still not not doing their job. What a debacle. The people over wyre have been inconvenienced more than most other areas for the last three years and I am sure there will be more to come. PS. When does Winter 23 end?

  • Thank you for your report on 22 February regarding the A585 Windy Harbour to Skippool project.

We apologise for any delays or inconvenience caused on Shard Road and Mains Lane last week. As soon as we became aware of the issue, we worked immediately to resolve it and changed the traffic light timings.

On Wednesday 21 February 2024 we finished the installation and testing of the permanent traffic lights at Skippool Bridge junction which are working on a timed system until we finish the installation and testing of traffic detectors under the road surface, due to be completed this week.

Once the traffic detectors are completed, the lights will be more intuitive and will react to the traffic flows, altering the timings of the lights accordingly without the need for manual intervention or monitoring.

Our technicians manually altered the timing of the lights on 22 February to allow traffic to run more smoothly. The lights will continue to be monitored during peak periods and if required, any further adjustments will be made until the system is finalised this week.

Your patience and understanding during this phase of work are greatly appreciated.

If you have any further queries, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

    Kind regards,

The A585 Windy Harbour to Skippool project.
