Updates

  • Thank you for your enquiry of 20 February 2024 via Fix My Street about the A1 exit-slip at Junction 72 Swalwell Interchange.

After reviewing the traffic congestion data, it can be seen that at peak times traffic queues building up on the A1 exit-slip relates to the volume of slow-moving traffic on the B6317 Hexham Road exit from the roundabout. This road is part of the local roads network.

As part of responding to your enquiry, we have reviewed the injury collision records for the last 7 years. This has not identified a notable injury or collisions record on this section of the Strategic Road Network (SRN) with no collisions involving vehicle making maneuvers to or from the A1,

Whilst we currently have no proposals to modify this approach, we will take the opportunity to engage with Gateshead Council as to whether they have any plans to address the congestion currently being experienced on the local roads network during peak hours.

Thank you again for contacting us. If there is anything we can help you with, please email or telephone our Contact Centre. They’re available 24 hours a day by phone: 0300 123 5000 or by email info@nationalhighways.co.uk. Alternatively, please visit the National Highways website at nationalhighways.co.uk.
