  • Thank you for contacting the National Highways Fix My Street tool on Friday 9 February 2024. Your enquiry was regarding the A1231 joining junction 65 of the A1.

We appreciate your feedback and understand your frustration with drivers queue jumping but unfortunately, we can’t control driver behaviour. However, we have installed " use left lane for A1" signage asking drivers to use the inside lane to join the A1. Unfortunately, we are unable to enforce the correct route drivers should take.

We can confirm that the A1231 is Sunderland Council’s responsibility up to a point where Gateshead Council take over the responsibility. This junctions’ concerns involves agreements between local authorities and National Highways to see if options can be identified and implemented whilst also complying with the standards of the road.

Once the improvement works have been completed in Spring 2025 or before, if possible, there will be a dedicated lane from the A1231 that runs right down to junction 66 and a merge lane from the roundabout to access lane 1 of the A1.

Thanks again for contacting us, we hope that the above information has been helpful. If there’s anything further you’d like to ask or any concerns to raise regarding the A1 Birtley to Coal House scheme, please don’t hesitate to contact us by email on or telephone the customer contact centre on 0300 123 5000.
