Excessive litter on verge exit11a coast bound M20

Reported via mobile in the Main Carriageway (NH) category by Mary Binks at 08:54, Friday 9 February 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5552058.

The amount of litter on the verge at 11a coast bound M20 is getting worse day by day. It is a health hazard- no doubt rats etc have increased in the area- as well as being totally unsightly and a disgrace to see as people exit for the channel Tunnel. The number of foreign lorries that are allowed to park there illegally is a disgrace. If I or any other motorist were to pull up on the hard shoulder anywhere on the motorway for no other reason than just to use it as a car park I would be swiftly moved on. As far as I can see this situation is completely ignored by the relevant authorities.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter. We have passed your report to our local inspector who will review the issue as part of their next safety inspection and arrange any remedial action. Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is carefully planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people. Litter picks often require lane closures, which are disruptive to traffic flow. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response. At present, our team are due to attend this location to carry out further litter picking work over the next few weeks. Kent Police are aware of the HGV parking issues and often attend this location to provide enforcement or move on any offending vehicles. Kind regards National Highway
