Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter. . Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is carefully planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people. Litter picks often require lane closures, which are disruptive to traffic flow. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response. I can confirm we have outstanding jobs to clear the litter and debris at the A228 junction with the M2, however, unfortunately, we’re unable to obtain the necessary approval to close or implement any suitable diversions to carry out our work at this location. This is due to ongoing road projects along our network and Kent County Council’s (KCC) roads which impact sections of the required diversion route to direct traffic back to the A228.

When we close parts of our network that impact the connectivity of local roads, we must agree suitable diversions with the local County Council and authority to ensure any roads used can accommodate all types of traffic including HGVs and large vehicles. This will limit our options for diversions. At present, we don’t expect work to take place at this junction until March or April 2024. We can assure you we’ll look to carry out litter and debris clearance work at this location as soon as it is possible. Kind regards National Highways
