Electronic billboard sign

Reported via mobile in the Electronic Sign (NH) category anonymously at 16:39, Thursday 25 January 2024

Sent to National Highways 1 minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5491571.

The horizontal electronic sign when it goes to white background is too bright for the motorway in dusk / evening it requires me to look away from the motorway and up skills my view and leaves little bright dots on my eyes to impair my vision when driving. I am a 30-year-old. This shouldn't happen to me. I can't imagine what it would do to someone who was older. It's also too distracting for a motorway.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways.

The application was approved on the basis that it removed up to seven static signs, thus balancing or even improving the legibility of information presented to motorists on approach.

There is no evidence that this type of now very common electronic sign has resulted in accidents anywhere.

We recommended conditions to Bristol City Council to control glare intensity and transition time. As the planning authority it is for them to consider enforcement action or not to resolve this issue.

Contact details for local authorities can be found by using the search facility at: www.gov.uk/find-local-council

    Kind regards

    National Highways

State changed to: not the council's responsibility
