Lights on the bend are continually off at night

Reported via desktop in the Not working (NH) category anonymously at 20:47, Wed 24 January 2024

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5487712.

The lights are off on the bend coming off junction 2 on the M53 north bound and has been like that for some time. The motorway is well lit until this point and then the lights stop when you reach the bend. This continues all the way round until you reach the next straight part of the road when it is lit again. It is so dark on the bend and is the area which needs to be the most lit. It is an accident waiting to happen. The same situation occurred a number of years back and I reported the issue. Unfortunately, an accident did occur and the next day, the lights were back on!

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about the streetlights on the bend coming off junction 2 on the M53 north bound.

We have switched lighting off on this stretch of road to support the Department of Transport’s aim to reduce carbon emissions. These roads have been carefully chosen with all road users safety considered. We are still using road lighting where it is needed, however, we are confident that we can use less of it without a significant impact on safety. We will continue to monitor this and may restore the lighting if the situation changes.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
