Need more speed calming measures

Reported via mobile in the Faded / Hard to see (NH) category anonymously at 20:41, Wed 22 November 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5242952.

An investigation needs to be conducted on the m606 slip road leading into Bradford. Many accidents happen in the same location nearly every day, as cars slow down to merge into the slip lane. However cars still travelling at 70mph do not have time to slow down so suddenly so collide with standstill or slower travelling vehicles ahead. Measures such as signage need to be put in place to warn drivers to slow down or the slow lane needs to have junction markings put in place.

An investigation needs to be carried out as many accidents take place and will continue to happen unless measures are put in place.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report of 22 November 2023 to suggest additional signage on the M606 at the exit slip for Bradford, junction 3. We understand your concerns and appreciate the time you’ve taken to contact us about this.

After investigating your enquiry, we can advise that the current layout consists of the following signage. On approach to junction 3 on the northbound carriageway, there are two main direction signs. The first is located two-thirds of a mile away from junction 3, and the second is positioned one-third of a mile away. Both signs indicate that lane 1 should be used to exit at junction 3, whereas lanes 2 and 3 continue towards ‘ring road (East) and city centre’. At the one-third of a mile sign, lane markings accompany these signs indicating lane 1 is only to be used as a filter lane to exit the carriageway.

In addition, there is also a sign at the diverge which reiterates the message on the previous two signs. It is at this point, that lane 1 in it’s entirety exits the carriageway towards the junction, before separating into two lanes on approach to the Staithgate Roundabout.

We’re confident that the signage here is sufficient to enable drivers to make an informed decision well in advance, on the manner of exiting the carriageway to use this junction. However, due to your concerns, we’ll be escalating these for discussion with West Yorkshire police at the next available opportunity. We’re positive that following these discussions, if changes need to be made, we’ll be able to implement these based on accident reports and police collated data which may identify any causes for concern. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you again for bringing this to our attention. If there is anything we can help you with, please email or telephone our Contact Centre. They’re available 24 hours a day by phone: 0300 123 5000 or by email info@nationalhighways.co.uk. Alternatively, please visit the National Highways website at nationalhighways.co.uk.
