Drain blocked by leaf buildup causing flooding in lane 1 after heavy rain

Reported via mobile in the Flooding/drainage (NH) category anonymously at 10:49, Mon 20 November 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5231887.

You have gone and closed a previous fault report saying the issue had been dealt with on 16th November - that is incorrect!

I physically saw the drain cleaner at work BUT it only did the section of road which is in the cutting alongside the farm and spawned by the two overbridges - it DID NOT GO FURTHER NORTH and do the subsequent set of drains / concrete drainage gully which starts just after the road rises out of the cutting and runs under the footbridge up to the junction 11 off slip, which I observed to be STILL full of leaf debris and blocked drains* on the 19th November.

* ALL the drains and concrete water gullies which line the A23 from Pease pottage to Handcross hill are similarly blocked by the way!

  • Thank you for making your report.

Your continued concerns for the condition of the gullies are noted. Recognising your concerns our inspector has requested further clearance works to be carried out further north towards Pease Pottage. Gully clearance on the southbound carriageway is alos being planned.

We continue to monitor during our weekly safety inspections of the A23 and other regular patrols, when any safety issues will be reported for mitigation.

    Kind regards
