Cycle path between Lewes and Falmer, uneven surface, overgrown vegetation, poor traffic separation and safety

Reported via desktop in the Road surface (NH) category anonymously at 10:59, Thu 9 November 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5192032.

The cycle path along the A27 between Lewes and Falmer is extremely poor in many places, with overgrown vegetation, uneven surface, very narrow, and no separation of the oncoming A27 traffic travelling at high speeds - leading to risk of cycles being blown or falling onto the highway. As a regular cyclist on this route, I want to highlight the lack of maintenance, poor infrastructure and safety risk on this busy route for cyclist. Comparing this section to the fantastic new cycle track East of Lewes to Polegate, this is very poor.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report.

We're aware of the outstanding vegetation maintenance along this cyclepath and please accept our apologies for this, while we've been prioritising flood hotspots during the prolonged heavy rain we've been experiencing. We will be attending to this as soon as practicable.

Long term we're aware that the cyclepath doesn't meet current standards that would have to be met if it was constructed today. However because of its position we cannot widen it or easily install barriers without losing more path width and impacting on the Site of Special Scientific Interest in the South Downs National Park. We have not, as yet, been able to identify any alternative routes but this issue sits in our network needs programme.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
