Road cones and lane closures M1 Jct 33 is causing chaos. If you are adding Emergency refuge areas near the junction they should be added to this area as a priority so lanes can be reopened. No workmen are seen in this area or at night. This doesn’t help with pollution and is adding to traffic queues in Rotherham.

Thank you for contacting us via FixMyStreet on 8 November 2023, regarding our works on the M1 between junctions 32 and 35a in South Yorkshire.
We're sorry to hear that you’ve feel our works are causing unnecessary delays at junction 33 and into Rotherham. We do try very hard to mitigate the effects of our work. Maintaining network performance for our customers is a priority.
We're aware that delays cause a risk of increased pollution. We work hard to minimise the environmental impact of our work.
We know that the appearance of general inactivity or no one working is a big issue for our customers. Some of our activities, including drainage and ducting work, require workers to be in non-visible locations. We’re looking at how we can better communicate this with our customers to ensure they're kept informed of why there may not be visible activity taking place.
We're pleased to let you know that our work is on schedule and that it should be complete during November 2024. Some of our work is weather dependant, so this date may change.
To minimise disruption, we’ve planned our work in two phases. Phase one started 5 June 2023 between junctions 34 and 35a both north and southbound. Phase two began September 2023 between junctions 32 and 34.
Phase one is on schedule to be removed in May 2024, in the vicinity of Junctions 34 and 35 in both directions. This will leave phase two in place near junctions 32 to 34 to be removed in November 2024.
We’ve planned our work so that our traffic management can be removed as soon as possible. When phase one is removed from junctions 32 to 34, we anticipate an improvement in the area of junction 33 as well.
All our traffic management is set out in accordance with the Department for Transport Chapter 8 Traffic Management directives that we must follow. Our traffic management must be in place before any of our work can take place.
To enable our works, we’ve removed lane one to give the site team safe working room, so delays are possible. Our electronic variable message signs placed in the verge note the current average journey time through the works.
Each of the emergency areas must be assessed for ecological impact, drainage and a number of other requirements before construction work can even begin. There are cables and pipes that run underground near to our work areas that could be damaged by our works. These services must be carefully located then protected or diverted so that the local homes and business they supply aren't disrupted.
Some of this work has been taking place at night or isn’t always visible from the main carriageway during the day or night. For example, workers can be in underground chambers and ducts to do this type of work and be completely unseen. Some of these activities are very awkward, especially where we have a narrow working area, preventing us from having multiple different activities in an area for safety purposes.
We try to construct each emergency area in the most efficient way possible and have been working to standardise our designs where we can. This allows us to work smarter and faster.
As we move to earthworks more work activity will become more visible.
