Width of path is very narrow in multiple places

Reported via mobile in the Pavement/footpath/cycleway/bridleway issue (NH) category anonymously at 11:54, Sun 5 November 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5175861.

Due to vegetation, poor surface and original construction of shared path, Almost the entirety of the path, between Falmer and the roundabout turnoff to the A277, is too narrow for 2 cyclists passing each other to feel safe. The surface is poor and in wet or windy conditions, feeling safe on this path is greatly reduced due to the proximity to Road traffic. There is room for the path to be widened but vegetation has to be cut more severely back and fresh tarmac laid in its place with perhaps a central line dividing cyclists riding east to west. I have ridden the path to and from work in Barcombe for over 2 years and have ridden the path as a leisure cyclist for 5 years. There have been no improvements, especially given how many cyclists use this path day to day. There is no alternative route between Lewes and Brighton so many will use just the one side of the A27. Just after Falmer going east where there are bollards, is a very steep drop off into the Farm field and this is not safe. A wider path and railing would improve this.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report.

We're aware of the outstanding vegetation maintenance along this cyclepath and please accept our apologies for this, while we've been prioritising flood hotspots during the prolonged heavy rain we've been experiencing. We will be attending to this as soon as practicable.

Long term we're aware that the cyclepath doesn't meet current standards that would have to be met if it was constructed today. However because of its position we cannot widen it or easily install barriers without losing more path width and impacting on the Site of Special Scientific Interest in the South Downs National Park. We have not, as yet, been able to identify any alternative routes but this issue sits in our network needs programme.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
