Large pothole on the A11 bridge. By bridge metal expansion joint.

Reported via desktop in the Pothole (NH) category anonymously at 09:29, Sat 4 November 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5173111.

On B1085 Bridge. Large pothole on the A11 bridge. By bridge metal expansion joint. Large metal strip now loose and moving as traffic passes. Each pass seems to vibrate it causing pothole to grow. What3words location ///thrusters.roving.welcome.

Reported 7th July 2023 to Cambridgeshire Highways, said not there issue please forward to National Highways. Reported to National Highways with your response being“The local authority is responsible for maintenance issues of this nature on this road. Please contact them to resolve this issue.”

So I go back to Cambridgeshire Highways on 2nd October 2023 and guess what they said “The issue you raised with us is on a road that is maintained by Highways England (previously the Highways Agency)”

So who else would maintain this road as both Cambridgeshire Highways and National Highways clearly don't think its them?

The hole has got worse in the past several months since first reported in July. So who is responsible when a biker or cyclist gets hurt by hitting it in the dark? Cars are performing emergency stops to avoid it and swinging dangerously onto opposite carriageway to avoid it.

  • Thank you for making your report regarding the road surface condition / expansion joint on the B1085 bridge over the A11. I have asked our structures inspection team to attend this location and assess this issue.

If any work is needed, they will arrange for this to happen.

Although we always aim to complete repairs as quickly as possible, timescales do vary as we try to minimise disruption to customers by combining activities into single closures and always ensuring the safety of our people.

    Kind regards National Highways
