Near fatal crash

Reported via mobile in the Abandoned Materials (NH) category anonymously at 11:21, Fri 20 October 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5117601.

This is not to do with material.

The set up of the diversion has led to me almost having a fatal crash today. As the lanes merger, drivers on the right side are unable to see traffic from the left merging. This led to me having to emergency break, a lorry behind me very almost crashed into me at speed.

I see a crash happened yesterday morning in the same area. Please review the safety to this lane.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways concerning M4/M5 roadworks.

The current layout is, M4 eastbound lane 1 closure on the junction 20 exit slip, leading to a merge where the M4 westbound meets. The M4 westbound is a single lane running with the M4 eastbound merging in, current merge length 150m.

We've checked and can confirm that this merge detail and length conforms to current Temporary Traffic Management design standards.

The Traffic Safety and Control Officer has driven the M4 east to M5 north route to establish the situation and reports everything is fine.

If you require any further information please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or info@nationalhighways.co.uk.

    Kind regards
