Variable speed limit signs

Reported via mobile in the Electronic Sign (NH) category anonymously at 05:05, Fri 13 October 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5092216.

For the last few nights the Hindhead tunnel northbound has been showing 40mph when I’ve driven through it at midnight, there are no broken down vehicles, obstructions, or roadworks so there appears to be no reason for the reduced limit. It seems that this is a reoccurring issue as there’s been multiple reports of this throughout the years. Can this please be looked into.

Updates

  • Thank you for submitting this report We're carrying out repairs to our advance fixed text message signs system on the A3 Hindhead Tunnel approaches, on the London bound carriageway through to the weekend.

We're placing a 40mph speed restriction with additional supporting fixed signs on the approaches to the Tunnel, to slow traffic should we need to close the road safely.

These signs and restrictions will be removed as soon as these works have been completed. We understands the impact on customer journeys during this time and apologises for the inconvenience.

    Kind regards National Highways
