Adding Part Time Traffic Signals on sliproad heading SOUTH A1(M)

Reported via desktop in the Traffic lights (NH) category anonymously at 19:16, Sat 1 July 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4739123.

Dear National Highways, so when you finish the scheme in 2025 can you add part time traffic signals when you heading to the A1 SOUTH so queues aren't happing up the A1(M) Washington area (Services) this would help the flow of traffic in the further years because there will be more traffic jams easier.

  • Thank you for contacting the National Highways customer contact centre via Fix My Street on 1 July 2023 regarding temporary traffic lights being installed on the A1 heading south at junction 67. The A1 Birtley to Coal House scheme has been designed, approved and we are now in the construction stage of the scheme. I can confirm that we are not installing temporary traffic lights on the entry slip road to filter traffic flow. If we were to install temporary traffic lights, this would create congestion causing tail backs onto the Kingsway roundabout. To reduce congestion, the southbound carriageway will have 2 lanes on the entry slip road, lane 2 will be a marked as a “Give Way” into lane 1 and then lane 1 becomes a designated lane to exit at junction 66. Once the scheme is complete, the southbound carriageway between junction 67 and 66 will have 4 lanes. Thank you again for contacting us. If you have any further enquiries or concerns regarding the A1 Birtley to Coal House scheme, please don’t hesitate to contact us again by email on or by telephone on 0300 123 5000.
