Litter/tyres

Reported via mobile in the Litter (NH) category anonymously at 08:22, Mon 26 June 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4715320.

If I had a £1 for every old tyre casing on the network as I travelled from Cribbs Causeway nr Bristol up to junction 36 of the M6 I'd be rich. There are loads! General rubbish in some areas also poor

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways concerning litter on the M5 near junction 10.

Your concerns have been passed to our maintenance team. They’ll inspect the area within the next two days and if necessary arrange for the litter to be cleared.

We share your concern that litter on our roads is unsightly as well as a risk to wildlife and the environment. It’s a huge challenge to keep roads free of litter and debris and can take hours to clear each stretch of road. If people didn’t drop litter in the first place it wouldn’t need to be picked up.

In some areas there is no safe space for our colleagues to work. In these circumstances it’s necessary to close lanes or slip roads to ensure we can work in safety. These closures are co-ordinated with other maintenance work to minimise disruption for our customers, which can occasionally cause delays in clearing litter from some locations.

On occasions litter will accumulate shortly after we’ve removed it. We trust you will appreciate the balance between the appearance of this litter against the safety of our workforce, the associated costs and the potential inconvenience caused by removing it.

If you require any further information please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or info@nationalhighways.co.uk.

    Kind regards
