Dangerous Current Traffic Management System - Serious Failings

Reported via desktop in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 11:54, Thu 15 June 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4676154.

The recent changes to this junction as part of the M25 J10 works has caused a significant unnecessary increase in the danger to road users. The system implemented currently is inadequate to manage traffic safely leaving the A3 towards Cobham. The reduction in the size of the slip area combined with the reduced lane capacity going from 2 lanes to 1 on the slip road. This combination of factors results in a significant backlog of traffic wanting to leave the A3 throughout the day which forces road users to queue in Lane 1 on the A3. This queue results in vulnerable standstill motorists which traffic approaching at 50mph (or higher due to non-compliance with the speed reduction) who are not aware of or expecting standstill traffic in Lane 1. Additionally, there are vehicles who are not wishing to leave the A3 who get caught up in this traffic who try and move to the fast-flowing Lane 2. There has been an increase in slid marks in this area, particularly in Lane 1 & 2, which also include HGV slid marks. All of these issues combined result in a hugely hazardous and dangerous area of the network. National Highways need to urgently properly investigate this matter. Should National Highways fail to address this danger there is going to be a dead or very serious collision which could have been avoided if National Highways revised this highly dangerous temporary traffic management plan for this junction. Please National Highway do not ignore the complaints you have received regarding this part of the network. If you do, any deaths will be a result of your negligence and failure to act on this matter.
