Damaged Barriers - Northbound Roundhill Tunnel

Reported via mobile in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 16:32, Thu 8 June 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4648082.

The Hawkinge Town Council has received a complaint about the disruption of the traffic whilst the damaged barrier was being repaired, which continued for about 6 weeks. The party is interested to know why such repairs took so long and considering the importance of the route what action has been put in place to ensure any future repairs can be carried out quickly and efficiently.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report concerning the barrier repairs. We do appreciate the impact the roadworks on the A20 may have on the local community. The essential safety repairs were for a damaged parapet on the westbound carriageway outside the tunnel. Our works were being carried out under a lane one closure through the length of the tunnel to assist with these repairs. This provided a safe working environment for our crews whilst keeping traffic flowing without the requirement for full road closures and diversions. A temporary safety fence had to remain in place whilst parapet parts were specially designed and made for the bespoke system on site.
