3 lanes go to one lane can’t see any reason for the cones

Reported via desktop in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 17:43, Mon 5 June 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4634913.

There doesn’t appear to be any reason for the coming off of two lanes it’s causing traffic delays and seems pointless. If the road works are done at night why are the lanes closed all day???

  • Thank you for your email of 5 June 2023 about the roadworks on the M621. We appreciate the time you've taken to contact us about the issue. We understand your frustration and we're sorry about the delay you experienced due to our works on the M621 Gildersome South bridge. We're replacing the substandard parapets to ensure the safety of the road user. We always aim to minimise disruption even if it doesn’t always seem like it. Our overriding priority is safely of the travelling public. On approach to this location the carriageway goes from 3 lanes with hard-shoulder to 2 lanes with hard-shoulder at the bridge. We did consider closing lane 2 during the day and running lane 1 with hard-shoulder but we were advised that the combined width of these 2 lanes was insufficient to allow 2 Heavy Goods Vehicles travelling side by side to safely negotiate the bend at this location. So unfortunately we've had to move the traffic flows into 1 lane during the day.

We appreciate it may not be a consolation but the delays from traffic management tend to be worst just after it is implemented. We then find road users will allow more time, switch journey routes or alter travel times to accommodate. Unfortunately we're unable to give a definite date for completion due to the complicated nature of the works but we're aiming for completion on 16 June 2023. Thank you again for contacting us. If there is anything we can help you with, please email or telephone our Contact Centre. They’re available 24 hours a day by phone: 0300 123 5000 or by email info@nationalhighways.co.uk Alternatively, please visit the National Highways website at nationalhighways.co.uk.

    Kind regards
