Poison hemlock dangerous invasive urgent cutting required before seeds form

Reported via desktop in the Vegetation (grass/hedges/trees) (NH) category by Mike Tristram at 14:06, Sun 28 May 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4604798.

Major infestation along most of north side of Sompting Bypass between Lyons Farm and Busticle Lane crossroads. All parts extremely toxic, nerve toxin causes respiratory failure and death, skin contact also a risk. Leaning out into footway, bare-armed children affected. Will also kill sheep or cattle if it gets through the hedge into farm fields. Must be cut urgently, with appropriate precautions to operatives and bystanders, to prevent seeding out and further spread.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report concerning the presence of Poison Hemlock along the footpath.

We’re aware of this, however this isn't a species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act that we're legally responsible to maintain. Our footpaths are however cut back with in our cyclic vegetation maintenance programme which is currently currently underway.

    Kind regards
