M18 Slip road south bound jct 1

Reported via desktop in the Road markings (NH) category anonymously at 18:39, Tue 16 May 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4562640.

On the M18 slip road there are markings to separate two lanes, though around three quarters of the way down these markings stop. There are no markings to show both lanes of traffic merge together, though my own understanding is that this should be the case. Often you end up with two lanes on the slip road trying to merge onto the M18 at different points. This causes a big build up of traffic on the motorway as the lane has to allow for two lanes of traffic on the slip road, whilst also causing traffic build up on the slip road. This also leads to accidents as people appear to have different views on if the traffic on the slip road should become one lane or stay as two.

My ask is could you either paint merging markings on the ground if it is intended for traffic to merge into one lane, or extend the lane markings to show that there should actually be two lanes.

Updates

  • Thank you for your email of 16 May about road markings on the M18 slip road. We're sorry for any inconvenience cause and we appreciate you taking the time to contact us about the issue.

We've checked the location and can confirm there are no road markings present on the slip road. This was the correct standard when the road was first made. We don’t change the network every time a new standard comes out unfortunately and a great number of the slip roads have this layout.

Thank you again for contacting us. If there is anything we can help you with, please email or telephone our Contact Centre. They’re available 24 hours a day by phone: 0300 123 5000 or by email info@nationalhighways.co.uk Alternatively, please visit the National Highways website at nationalhighways.co.uk.

    Kind Regards
