Updates

  • Thank you for your email of 13 May 2023 about concerns regarding driver behaviour on the A1. We're sorry to hear of your recent experience. We can advise that the exit lane for Darrington must remain open to reduce delays and allow access to users needing to exit at this junction. The hard shoulder and restricted hard shoulder must also remain open to enable emergency access. Drivers must not use a hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by the police, traffic officers or a traffic sign. Despite this, it seems that some road users may be misusing this to 'jump the queue' so we've made every attempt to address the issue and positively influence against this.

Whilst we do work in partnership with Police and local authorities when planning and implementing our traffic management, we can advise that we’re not an enforcement or prosecution authority. Therefore we can only dissuade drivers through the signage that has been deployed.

Thank you again for contacting us. If there is anything we can help you with, please email or telephone our Contact Centre. They’re available 24 hours a day by phone: 0300 123 5000 or by email info@nationalhighways.co.uk Alternatively, please visit the National Highways website at nationalhighways.co.uk. Kind Regards
