Overhead Gantry variable speed limit 40mph for no reason

Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 06:50, Thu 11 May 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4540051.

At approx. 5:45am today, an overhead gantry showed a variable speed limit of 40mph for no obvious reason on the road, with the gantry directly after it showing national speed limit. This caused excessive, unnecessary, emergency braking of the traffic, which can cause accidents and is not efficient. The 40mph overhead gantry had speed cameras so one has to wonder if this is a revenue/fine generating exercise, as more drivers are likely to be caught out by the speed limit change as it was unnecessary.

Updates

  • This issue has not been fixed. Every morning at 0530hrs the same speed restriction comes on and within th space of 1.5miles siagnages goes from 50, 40 60, 40 then back to nationals. This morning the inevitable happened, as drivers negotiate a major junctions and the flux of speed changes. A crash involving a lorry and people carrier. I beleive everyone was OK but if you do not fix this issue, it may be a fatal accident.
