Overhead gantry reduced speed limits
Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 07:09, Thu 4 May 2023
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4515148.
On 4th May'23 at 5:50am there were overhead gantry reduced speed limits down to 40mph on the approach and passing M25 Jct28 when traffic was free flowing and not as busy as usual. This is a common occurrence around this time mid-week for no apparent reason. All this does is slow people down, increase wear on their brakes and bunch vehicles together causing traffic and more issues. Someone needs more training on when this should occur or if an automated process, someone needs to review when speed restrictions are implemented.

Was contacted by the Highways agency with ‘evidence’ that the gantry sign variable speed limits were different to what I experienced, so clearly their data is incorrect. I don’t know how they expect to operate/maintain the traffic on the rods if that is the case. These reduced speed limits occur on a regular basis for no reason and are a symptom of poor sensor data and/or poor automation of the road variable speed network that causes unnecessary restrictions on major UK roads.
