Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4488879.
Was the overnight diversion 25th to 26th really necessary from the West of Newcastle almost to South Shields for the A1 south? A simple journey from the airport to Durham became a ridiculous odyssey of needlessly wasted time and fuel.
Thank you for contacting the National Highways customer contact centre via Fix My Street on Wednesday 26 4 April 2023 regarding the diversion route used for the closures on the A1 Birtley to Coal House scheme.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused as a result of the diversion route we have in place for the A1 Birtley to Coal House scheme closures.
We closed the A1 southbound between junction 68 to 65 to continue the widening works. With regards to the diversion routes for any closures on the A1, we’re limited in the routes we can use. We must stick to the official diversion routes which have been approved by the local authorities for this region. These diversion routes are chosen for various reasons as they are capable of dealing with all A1 traffic in the event of planned roadworks, or any unplanned incidents that may occur, which result in a closure of the A1. While we understand this is a long diversion route, this is the best option and keeps the traffic on a higher capacity network.
Thank you again for contacting us and we hope the information provided has been helpful to you. If you have any further enquiries or concerns regarding the A1 Birtley to Coal House scheme, please don’t hesitate to contact us again by email on A1BirtleytoCoalHouse@highwaysengland.co.uk or by telephone on 0300 123 5000.
