Parents of children who attend the nearby South Hunsley School are still concerned that the footpath is unprotected along the A63 whilst the footpath works are underway. There is currently no barrier and despite the temporary 40 mph limit parents are not satisfied. Should the footpath be closed until works are complete? [email removed]

Thank you for your email 26 April 2023 about the unprotected footpath along the A63. Safety is our highest priority and we appreciate you taking the time to contact us about the issue.
There wasn't a safety barrier outside South Hunsley school previously, only a pedestrian guardrail for a short distance at the end of Lowfield Lane. Unfortunately we can’t close the footpath in front of the school prior to Lowfield Lane as a legal agreement would need to be in place to use the school footpath as a diversion route.
With regards to the footpath passed Lowfield Lane, the diversion route doesn’t have an acceptable pedestrian footpath up Lowfield Lane and leads onto a road, therefore we haven’t been able to use this as a viable pedestrian diversion route to be able close the footpath during the day and night.
We can confirm the barrier is due to start being installed from 2 May 2023.
Thank you again for bringing this matter to our attention, I hope that my response has answered the concerns you have raised. If we can be of any further assistance, please contact us by telephone on 0300 123 500 or by email at info@nationalhighways.co.uk.
Kind regards
